Ethereal goth
WebEthereal wave (or ethereal wave goth) is an outgrowth of darkwave, so I can only describe it as a more “gothic”, “otherworldly” and “romantic”. Early guitar driven Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twins are considered to be ethereal wave. Neoclassical darkwave, according to my friend, doesn’t really exist. Or at least, it’s the wrong label. WebEthereal Wave is a style of music that originated in Gothic Rock, and eventually started meshing with Dream Pop and Shoegaze. While I enjoy various bands within Ethereal Wave as a whole, my preferences lie very specifically towards the darker, distorted, more Goth/Post-Punk-based form of the style (i.e. Cocteau Twins prior to their Treasure album).
